Donald Trump on criminal migrants: “They have it in their genes”

In the US election campaign, Republican Donald Trump repeatedly targets immigrants. Now the ex-president is causing a stir with a statement about crime among migrants.

Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump has once again made disparaging comments about migrants. In an interview with the conservative journalist and presenter Hugh Hewitt on Monday, he initially spoke of the thousands of murderers that the Democrats had allowed into the country through their lax immigration policy.

“Many of them have murdered far more than one person and are now living happily in the USA,” the ex-president continued. “You know, a murderer, I think it’s in their genes. And we have a lot of bad genes in our country right now.”

Trump’s campaign team said that when he made the statement about genes, Trump was “clearly referring to murderers, not migrants.” Trump repeatedly portrays immigrants as dangerous criminals and insults them in racist terms. He also uses dehumanizing language and said, for example, that it would “poison the blood of our country.” During his presidential inaugural speech at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee in July, he indirectly referred to migrants as trash.

White House condemns Donald Trump’s statements

Asked about Trump’s statement, Karine Jean-Pierre, spokeswoman for US President Joe Biden, said: “This type of language is hateful, it is disgusting, it is inappropriate and has no place in our country.” Trump is running against Biden’s running mate Kamala Harris in the presidential election on November 5th. Polls predict a close race.

Immigration, both legal and illegal, is a central issue in the US election campaign ahead of the vote in early November. Studies show that illegal immigrants in the United States are no more likely to commit crimes than those born there.
