At the end of September, Israel killed the Hezbollah chief in an airstrike and left the Lebanese militia leaderless. But that is apparently not enough for Benjamin Netanyahu.
The Israeli Air Force says it has killed another high-ranking Hezbollah commander in an attack in the Lebanese capital Beirut. The head of the Islamist militia’s headquarters, Suhail Hussein Husseini, was killed in a targeted attack on Monday, the army said on Tuesday morning.
He was also a member of Hezbollah’s Jihad Council, the top military body of the Iran-backed Shiite extremist organization. According to the army, Husseini was also responsible for arms shipments from Iran to Lebanon and their subsequent distribution.
Hezbollah currently has no leader
At the end of September, Israel killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah in an air strike on the Lebanese capital Beirut. Since then, the militia has lacked a central leader. “The process of selecting a successor to the secretary general takes time and requires appropriate circumstances,” senior Hezbollah political official Mahmoud Kmati said on Iraqi state television. “For this reason, we are currently content with a temporary joint command.”
In addition, the Israeli military has killed numerous other Hezbollah commanders. Commander Hashem Safieddine, considered a possible successor to Nasrallah, has been missing since an Israeli airstrike on Beirut on Thursday. He cannot be searched for because Israel prevents this, said Kmati. Nasrallah’s body will remain in Lebanon and will be buried there as soon as circumstances allow.
