Russian troops have been advancing in eastern Ukraine for months. In particular, the cities of Toretsk and Selydove in the Donetsk region are hotly contested.
In eastern Ukraine, Russian troops have advanced into the eastern part of the long-contested city of Toretsk. “The fighting is taking place in Toretsk itself. The situation is unstable, there are literally fights for every entrance to the house,” said the press spokeswoman for the responsible army group, Anastasiya Bobovnikova, on news television. The Russian units have already fought their way towards the city’s central coal mine.
Before the Russian invasion, over 30,000 people lived in the mining town in the Donetsk region. Despite the fighting, thousands are still said to be holding out in the heavily damaged urban area.
According to the Ukrainian General Staff, heavy fighting also raged, especially in the section of the front between Pokrovsk and Kurakhove. According to military observers from both sides, the Ukrainian troops are coming under increasing pressure near the town of Selydove. Ukraine has been resisting the Russian invasion for more than two and a half years.
