After Kevin Kühnert’s resignation, the new appointments in the ranks of the SPD are now clear. In the interview, Matthias Miersch gives insights into which topics are particularly important to him.
According to dpa information from party circles, SPD parliamentary group deputy Matthias Miersch is to become the new SPD general secretary. The party leaders Lars Klingbeil and Saskia Esken proposed Miersch as an interim successor to the resigned Kevin Kühnert. The Presidium unanimously followed the recommendation of the party leaders
The left-wing party member from Lower Saxony is an experienced politician and strategist. He has been a member of the Bundestag since 2005 and is currently part of the leadership of the Parliamentary Left in the SPD.
The lawyer has been deputy parliamentary group leader since 2021. In this role, Miersch is responsible for the environment, climate protection, energy, agriculture and consumer protection – an issue area in which the SPD expects a tough battle in the election campaign with the Union.
SPD: Miersch follows Kühnert
Miersch is considered a staunch advocate of the energy transition, i.e. the gradual phase-out of fossil fuels. For example, he also played a leading role in negotiating the controversial heating law with the Greens and the FDP. Miersch recently declared that he wanted to run for the Bundestag again.
Miersch is to take over the office from Kevin Kühnert, who is retiring from politics for health reasons, with immediate effect. A good year before the federal election, the SPD is losing its most important campaign manager. It initially remained unclear whether Miersch should take on this task fully or whether party leader Klingbeil, who already has experience, would step in.
