Parties: AfD parliamentary group takes a relaxed view of the debate about ban proceedings

Some members of the Bundestag are seeking proceedings to ban the AfD before the Federal Constitutional Court. The AfD faction is not particularly concerned about this.

According to its first parliamentary manager in the Bundestag, the AfD is calm about the initiative of some members of the Bundestag for a possible AfD ban procedure. “This is the very last attempt by parties that have been horribly and rightly punished by voters,” Bernd Baumann told journalists in Berlin. “So we’re extremely relaxed about it.” People trust in democracy. “I’m not afraid of anything,” he added.

In principle, Baumann did not oppose party bans. For example, the German Communist Party (KPD) was rightly banned. Such bans could be sought among left- and right-wing extremists, but the AfD is miles away from that. “We are further away from this than the other parties in the Bundestag,” he said.

Majority in parliament rather unlikely

37 representatives of the SPD, Union, Greens and Left in the Bundestag are seeking an AfD ban procedure before the Federal Constitutional Court in Karlsruhe. They want to present their joint proposal for this at their group meetings this week and next. A majority in parliament for such a step currently seems unlikely, as there are major concerns about it.

A party ban can be applied to the Federal Constitutional Court by the Bundestag, Bundesrat or Federal Government. The AfD would have to be proven in the process that it is taking aggressive, combative action against the constitution.
