Most recently, Omar bin Laden worked as a painter in Normandy – until a social media post brought the authorities into action. This now has serious consequences for bin Laden’s offspring.
France’s Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau has banned the son of former al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden from returning to France. The 43-year-old Omar bin Laden could no longer enter France “under any circumstances,” Retailleau emphasized on the online service
Omar bin Laden lived with his British partner in Normandy between 2016 and 2023 and temporarily worked as an artist. He left his father at the age of 19 and previously lived in several Arab countries. Osama bin Laden was married to five women and had more than 20 children.
His son was expelled from France in 2023 because he is said to have published a message on an online service on the anniversary of his father’s death, which was seen as a justification for terrorism. Omar bin Laden denied being the author of this message. He currently lives in Qatar.
Bin Laden’s son as an example of successful deportation?
“The prefect issued a notice to leave the country and achieved the exit,” emphasized Interior Minister Retailleau in his contribution, who obviously wanted to cite an example of a successful deportation shortly before the meeting with the prefects.
Immediately after taking office, Retailleau campaigned to increase the number of deportations from France. In recent years, the authorities have issued more and more requests to leave the country, but at the same time an ever smaller proportion of those affected actually left the country.
Since 2020, on average only seven percent of immigrants without the right to remain have left the country voluntarily or by force. Planned deportations often fail because the countries of origin delay or refuse to issue the necessary documents.
The new government under conservative Prime Minister Michel Barnier has announced a tougher course in immigration policy. This is also a response to the expectations of the right-wing populist Rassemblement Nation faction, which could overthrow the government at any time if it supported a vote of no confidence by the left.
