The death toll in the embattled Gaza Strip is increasing. Not only Hamas terrorists are dying, but also civilians who are caught between the fronts. There is no end to the fighting in sight.
According to Palestinian figures, the number of deaths since the beginning of the Gaza war has risen to 42,010. Another 97,720 Palestinians have been injured since October 7, 2023, the Hamas-controlled Health Ministry said. The information does not distinguish between civilians and fighters and cannot be independently verified. However, international organizations such as the UN consider them to be widely credible.
According to Palestinian reports, many people have been killed and injured in new Israeli military operations in the north of the Gaza Strip. The advances would therefore be aimed primarily at the Shejaiya district in the city of Gaza as well as the refugee settlements of Jabalia and Nuseirat. Palestinian rescue workers described the attacks as extremely intense. In most cases they could not get to the injured because of the intense fighting.
Nine members of a family were killed in a single Israeli air strike on a residential building alone, hospital doctors said. This information could not be independently confirmed either. The Israeli military did not initially comment on the incident.
The Gaza War was triggered by the unprecedented attack by the Islamist Hamas and its allies on the south of Israel on October 7th of the previous year. Members of the terrorist militias and other gunmen killed more than 1,200 people and kidnapped around 250 more as hostages in the Gaza Strip. Since then, Israel has been waging a relentless war in the sealed-off coastal area to destroy Hamas as a military formation and political organization.
