Hurricane “Milton” hits Florida with wind speeds of up to 195 km/h and flash floods. First responders have to stop work and over a million people are without power.
Hurricane Milton has reached the US state of Florida and caused destruction and flooding. Almost three million households and businesses were without power after Milton made landfall near Siesta Key as a Category 3 hurricane late Wednesday evening (local time). The storm triggered several tornadoes in advance. According to unconfirmed media reports, several people were killed by a tornado in a senior living complex on Florida’s east coast.
As it moved over Florida, “Milton” weakened to hurricane force 1 on Thursday morning, according to the US hurricane center NHC, but still reached winds of up to 150 kilometers per hour. Flood warnings remained in effect across much of the state.
According to the website poweroutage.us, 2.8 million homes and businesses lost power. “Milton” should move further inland during the day and thus also over the tourist resort of Orlando with the Disney World theme park.
Florida and other states in the southeastern United States were hit by storm Helene at the end of September. More than 230 people were killed, numerous buildings were damaged or completely destroyed, and large areas were flooded. After Hurricane Katrina in 2005, “Helene” was the most serious storm in the region in 50 years.
