People from Syria and Turkey were the most likely to receive asylum seeker benefits in 2023. The number has increased overall – but there is a difference to 2022.
The number of asylum seekers receiving benefits from the state increased again in 2023. According to the Federal Statistical Office, at the end of last year 522,700 people in Germany received standard benefits under the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act. The number of benefit recipients rose by around eight percent compared to 2022. “This continued the upward trend from the previous year,” reported the office. From 2021 to 2022, the benefits increased significantly more, namely by 22 percent.
Foreigners who are in the federal territory and meet the requirements are entitled to benefits. A distinction is made between standard benefits and special benefits.
More than a quarter are minors
66 percent of those receiving standard benefits at the end of 2023 were male. 28 percent were minors. The most common countries of origin were Syria and Turkey, each with 15 percent of all those entitled to benefits. This was followed by Afghanistan (11 percent) and Iraq (8 percent). 5 percent of all those entitled to benefits at the end of 2023 came from Ukraine.
In addition to the standard benefits, special benefits can also be granted in special needs situations. This includes benefits in the event of illness, pregnancy and childbirth. At the end of 2023, around 274,500 people received special benefits. This included around 13,000 beneficiaries who were only entitled to special benefits.
