ChatGPT as homework help, virtual tutors or language learning applications? The countries are calling for an open approach to this.
The education ministers of the federal states are generally in favor of an open approach to artificial intelligence (AI) in everyday school life. At a conference in Berlin, they agreed on recommendations for dealing with the technology, but also discussed possible dangers and suggested measures to counter them.
The recommendations are intended to serve as “orientation for the responsible, age-appropriate and skilled use of AI in school educational processes, especially for the educational administration of the federal states,” as it says in a resolution. The authorities responsible for schools should accompany the use of AI “critically and constructively and with the necessary openness in the sense of a positive error culture”.
According to the decision, responsible, age-appropriate and experienced use of AI will become a new key competency, not least in professional and work contexts. That is why the federal states also emphasize that the participation of all students in technology must be guaranteed in order to counteract a so-called digital divide.
