The Ukraine summit has been canceled – President Zelensky is still coming to meet the Chancellor and the Federal President. This shows the seriousness of the situation. And that we need a way out.
Anyone who drives through Ukraine these days will notice after a while a certain regularity: the higher the person in the nomenclature, the further away from the trench where the 500 and 1000 kilogram Russian glide bombs fall, the louder the phrases: We can, No, we have to win, we must not let up now, negotiations with Putin are pointless.
At the bottom of this hierarchy are guys like Yevgeny, 34, who says: “I won’t live to see my 35th birthday.” They picked him up on the street in his hometown of Uzhhorod, led him away in handcuffs, documents about unfitness? Doesn’t matter. A little over a month later he was sitting in the trenches, right at the front, with a machine gun, in a steel storm of glide bombs, drone attacks, artillery shells and bullets. The radio said: “Hold position.” But on the 11th day he and his comrades left because they understood: We’ll be dead by tomorrow at the latest.
