Next week: Scholz travels to Istanbul for meetings with Erdogan

Chancellor Scholz travels to Istanbul for a meeting with Erdogan. Scholz is probably interested in taking back refugees. Turkey, on the other hand, expects progress on the issue of armaments.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz is traveling to Turkey next week for talks with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan. The meeting will take place next Saturday in Istanbul, said Wolfgang Büchner, deputy spokesman for the federal government. A press conference is planned afterwards. Expected topics include migration, the war in Ukraine, the situation in the Middle East and economic policy issues.

When it comes to migration, the federal government recently stated that Turkey had agreed to make practical improvements in the processing of deportations. Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser (SPD) recently said when asked about progress in deportations to Turkey: “We are working on it and I am sure that we will be able to report successes there in the next few weeks.” When it comes to the countries of origin of asylum seekers, Turkey ranks third behind Syria and Afghanistan.

Turkish circles said on Thursday that there was movement in Germany regarding Turkey’s planned purchase of Eurofighter fighter jets. Turkey intends to increase its defense arsenal with 40 Eurofighters. Germany is involved in production. That is why approval from the federal government is required for every export transaction. When asked, the Federal Ministry of Economics, which is responsible for arms exports, said that “the federal government generally does not comment on any ongoing processes.”

Erdogan repeatedly attacks Israel sharply against the background of the actions in the Gaza war and in Lebanon. In this context, he accused the federal government of double standards and criticized the supply of weapons to the country.
