Health Minister Karl Lauterbach has spoken out in favor of coming to terms with the Corona policy without assigning blame. “I’m in favor of coming to terms with it – but differently than many people imagine,” the SPD politician told the “Handelsblatt”. It’s not about assigning blame, but about lessons for future crises.
It is wrong to criticize those who pursued cautious policies at the time with the argument that the pandemic was not that dangerous and that caution was not necessary. The accusation that a “deep state” should harass citizens is also false. “There were no such background thoughts. We always tried to protect the population,” said Lauterbach.

Rather, the key questions should be whether the instruments used were “medically correct” and how one can prevent a polarization of the debate in future crises, as occurred during the corona pandemic.
The Ministry of Health was essentially responsible for Corona policy, led by Jens Spahn (CDU) at the time of the Corona outbreak and the first waves of its spread in Germany. After the 2021 federal election, Lauterbach took over. The general line was set by the Chancellery under Angela Merkel (CDU) and then Olaf Scholz (SPD). Lauterbach repeatedly advocated strict protective measures.
The traffic light coalition recently disagreed about the type of processing. The FDP is insisting on a Bundestag study commission, while the SPD favors a citizens’ assembly made up of randomly selected participants.
