Russian troops are trying to recapture lost territory near Kursk. The Ukrainian units are coming under heavy pressure, including on other sectors of the front.
The Russian armed forces are putting the Ukrainian army under heavy pressure on various fronts. “Active operations are now taking place along the entire length of the front line, but fighting is particularly fierce in the Pokrovsk and Kurakhove directions,” President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Platform X after a high command meeting in Kiev. In addition, Russian troops have been attacking Ukrainian positions in the western Russian region of Kursk for almost five days. “The boys are holding out and counterattacking.”
The day before, Ukrainian military officials had indicated that the situation on the front sections near Kursk had become difficult. According to Ukrainian commander Olexander Syrskyj, Moscow has now withdrawn almost 50,000 soldiers from the front lines in southern Ukraine and relocated them to Kursk for counterattacks. The Ukrainian army advanced deep into Russian territory near Kursk in a surprise attack in the summer.
Meanwhile, the commander of the Russian Spetsnaz unit “Akhmat”, General Apty Alaudinov, spread reports of success. He claimed that it had been possible to bring almost half of the areas near Kursk that had been conquered from Ukraine back under Russian control. “Today we note that about half of the territory occupied by the enemy has been liberated,” state agency Tass quoted him as saying. The current situation in the region could not be independently verified.
