The ex-president is critical of US aid to Ukraine. Now he is irritating with a statement about the Ukrainian president.
US presidential candidate Donald Trump has blamed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky for Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine. “He should never have allowed this war to break out,” said the Republican in an almost hour and a half podcast with YouTuber Patrick Bet-David.
In the conversation, Trump also questioned US aid to Ukraine, which was attacked by Russia. “I think Zelensky is one of the best profiteers I’ve ever seen. Every time he comes, we give him $100 billion. Who else in history has gotten that much money? This has never happened before.”
In fact, the USA is Ukraine’s most important supporter. Since the war began in February 2022, Biden’s government has provided more than $50 billion in military aid to Kiev – significantly less than Trump claimed. The latest release of new funds was preceded by a long wrangling in the US Parliament.
At another point in the interview, Trump also said: “If I were president, this war would never have happened. (Russian President Vladimir) Putin would never have done that.” He claimed that if he won the election he would be able to end the war before his inauguration in January.
The presidential election will take place in the USA in just under three weeks, on November 5th. Polls indicate a very close race between Republican and Democrat Kamala Harris.
