War in Ukraine: Flying object triggers air alarm on NATO’s eastern flank

Because of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, NATO has massively expanded its airspace surveillance on the eastern flank. Not just as a deterrent.

NATO accuses Russia of violating airspace again. According to Secretary General Mark Rutte, a missile entered the airspace of alliance member Romania, which borders Ukraine, on Thursday evening. The Romanian authorities and the commander-in-chief of NATO forces in Europe responded quickly and effectively, he said at a press conference after a meeting of the defense ministers of the alliance states in Brussels.

According to information from Romania, two Spanish F-18 fighter jets from NATO air surveillance were alerted before the missile crossed the border in order to control the situation. The Romanian Air Force also sent two F-16 aircraft. However, the pilots did not have to intervene. According to the information, there was no longer any radar signal around 20 minutes after the missile entered Romanian airspace.

It was considered possible that the missile was a Russian drone that got out of control. However, the fighter planes had no visual contact and no debris was found until recently. Residents in the region were asked to go to cellars or shelters because of the air alarm. The flying object penetrated around 14 kilometers deep into Romanian airspace.

Since the beginning of Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine, Russian drones have penetrated the airspace of neighboring Romania several times. So far, however, NATO assumes that they were not deliberately directed there with the aim of an attack.
