The people in the neighboring country have had enough of the war, says the Polish Defense Minister. And only a few Ukrainians living in Poland want to voluntarily fight for their homeland.
Poland’s Defense Minister Wladyslaw Kosiniak-Kamysz has the impression that Ukrainians are exhausted by the war. “The situation at the front is difficult, there is enormous war fatigue,” said Kosiniak-Kamysz after the meeting of NATO defense ministers in Brussels. One has to admire the heroism of the Ukrainian soldiers who have been defending their homeland against the Russian invasion for almost three years now.
Poland’s defense minister is therefore skeptical about Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s so-called victory plan. This is not a solution to the problem and “not a clear, bright light that will immediately change reality.”
Ukrainians living in Poland do not want to fight
Kosiniak-Kamysz continued that Ukrainians living in Poland still had little interest in a planned volunteer brigade. So far around 300 men and women have signed up for this.
The plan to train a “Ukrainian Legion” in Poland was part of a security agreement signed by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk in July.
The EU and NATO member Poland is one of the most committed political and military supporters of Ukraine, which is attacked by Russia. Poland has also taken in almost a million refugees from its neighboring country. In Ukraine, the increased mobilization of new forces for the army is only slowly producing results, while the troops in the field are stretched thin and fatigued.
