The reason why Meta blocked the Facebook page of the Russian delegation at the negotiations in Vienna, as well as the apologies made, do not remove a number of issues. This was announced on Tuesday, January 18, by Russian Senator Alexei Pushkov.
A spokesperson for Meta earlier in the day said the blocking was done by automated means in error. She also apologized to users on behalf of the company.
This, however, does not remove a number of questions. First of all, why did the error of the automated system occur precisely in those days when everyone’s attention was riveted on the negotiations on security guarantees for Russia in the OSCE and on Russia’s position on this issue, ”the senator wrote in Telegram.
Pushkov also wondered why “a certain anonymous representative of Meta apologizes, instead of the company’s management making an official statement, given that the page of the official Russian delegation, and not a private person, was blocked.”
“Thirdly, by virtue of what algorithms could the automated system block the page on which official documents are posted,” the senator added.
However, he drew attention to the fact that Meta has already been seen in repeated violations of Russian laws and regulations, in particular in refusing to remove prohibited content.
The head of the Russian delegation, Konstantin Gavrilov, said that on January 14, Facebook blocked the page of the Russian delegation at the talks in Vienna on military security issues. He noted that representatives of the delegation published on their page on the social network only statements by the Russian leadership and the Russian Foreign Ministry.
On January 16, Roskomnadzor demanded that Facebook restore access to the page and report on the reasons for the restrictions. A day later, the social network complied with the demand without comment and restored access to the page of the Russian delegation.
The head of the Center for Political Information, Alexei Mukhin, in turn, said on January 17 that the initiative to block pages does not come from the companies themselves, but from US government agencies. According to him, those who are sympathetic to Russia and the Kremlin rarely stay out of blockages.
