Presidential election in Moldova: Higher voter turnout in the presidential election in Moldova

The groundbreaking presidential election and an EU referendum are underway in the Republic of Moldova, located between Romania and Ukraine. Voter turnout in the afternoon is higher than in 2020.

In the presidential election in the Republic of Moldova, located between Romania and Ukraine, there was a higher turnout this afternoon than in the first round four years ago. As of 4:00 p.m. local time (3:00 p.m. CEST), 39 percent of eligible voters (1.1 million) had cast their votes, as local media reported, citing the Central Election Commission. That is over 215,000 more voters than in 2020.

Pro-Western President Maia Sandu is running for a second term in office in the former Soviet republic, which is heavily influenced by Russia. Because she has ten competitors, a runoff election with the second-place candidate in two weeks is likely.

As of 3 p.m. local time (2 p.m. CEST), almost a third of those eligible to vote also took part in the referendum held at the same time to anchor the planned EU accession in the constitution, with 32.11 percent or 957,000 votes cast.

For both the presidential election and the referendum, a minimum turnout of one third of those eligible to vote is required. The polling stations in the country are open from 7 a.m. to 9 p.m. (6 a.m. to 8 p.m. CEST). Significant results are expected late in the evening.
