Turkish preacher Fethullah Gülen, who lived in exile in the US, has died at the age of 83, according to media reports. The Turkish public television station TRT reported, citing groups close to Gülen, that the Islamic cleric died in a hospital on Monday night. Gulen was accused by Ankara of being behind an attempted coup against President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in 2016.
Gülen’s influence was based on his Hizmet movement. Erdogan’s long-time ally fell out with him in 2013. The Turkish government accused Gülen of heading a “terrorist” organization. Gülen always rejected the allegations made against him.
Gülen has lived in the US state of Pennsylvania since 1999. In 2017 his Turkish citizenship was revoked.
