Forecasts about the arrival of new refugees in Switzerland were wrong this year. Because fewer people applied for asylum, the authorities are now taking action.
There have recently been fewer asylum applications in Switzerland than expected. That’s why the authorities are closing nine of the 36 temporary federal asylum centers by March.
This means that the reception capacity falls by almost 20 percent, as the State Secretariat for Migration reports. The number of places has been expanded to 10,500 since 2022. However, only around half is currently occupied, it was said.
In September, 40 percent fewer applications were submitted than in the same month last year. “The situation on the migration routes towards Western Europe does not indicate a sudden increase in the next few months,” said the State Secretariat. If necessary, the number of places will be increased again.
In total, almost 21,000 asylum applications were made in Switzerland this year by the end of September.
