Beijing is considered Moscow’s most important ally. At the Brics summit, the heads of state want to talk once again about bilateral relations. For Putin, it’s probably about one thing above all else.
China’s head of state and party leader Xi Jinping has landed in the Russian city of Kazan on the Volga for the Brics summit of emerging industrial countries. The head of the Russian republic of Tatarstan, Rustam Minnikhanov, welcomed the guest at the airport, as could be seen on television images.
Xi Jinping is one of more than 20 heads of state and government expected at the summit, which runs until Thursday. The abbreviation Brics stands for the first five member countries of the organization: Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South African President Cyril Ramaphosa are also already in Kazan. According to official information, individual talks between Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin are also planned on the first day of the summit. Beijing said it was about bilateral relations, but also questions of regional and international politics.
Putin also wants to use the summit to show that he is not internationally isolated despite his war of aggression against Ukraine and Western sanctions. He seeks to build a new world order without Western dominance, but also stressed that the Brics alliance, which also includes Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia and the United Arab Emirates, is not directed against anyone.
