EU candidate country: Moldova corrects results for EU referendum

The EU referendum in the former Soviet Republic of Moldova, which is torn between Russia and the West, was even closer than initially reported. The electoral commission gives new figures.

After the extremely close EU referendum in the former Soviet Republic of Moldova, the electoral commission revised the results slightly to the detriment of the victorious pro-European supporters. As a result, more than 1,000 yes votes were lost and were now given to the opponents. As of now, 50.38 percent of participants voted to enshrine a pro-European course as an unchangeable strategic goal in the constitution. That was 750,075 yes votes against 738,799 no votes (49.62 percent).

According to Moldovan media, people in the majority of regions in the country voted against the constitutional change. The tipping point in the other direction was the hundreds of thousands of Moldovans living abroad – especially in the EU.

Result of presidential election unchanged, Sadu goes to runoff

There was no change in the results of the presidential election held at the same time on Sunday. Incumbent Maia Sandu received 42.45 percent of the vote. In the second round on November 3rd, former Attorney General Alexandru Stoianoglo will be her opponent. He received 25.98 percent of the vote and ran for the traditionally strong Socialist Party of pro-Russian former President Igor Dodon. According to the electoral commission, turnout in the vote for the presidency was 51.68 percent.

Moldova, with 2.5 million inhabitants, has traditionally been torn between the West and Russia. The impoverished agricultural country, located between EU and NATO member Romania and Ukraine, which is attacked by Russia, is a candidate for EU membership.
