Alliance defense: Moscow summons ambassador to Rostock naval post

The German Navy will take on a leadership role for NATO in the Baltic Sea for the next four years. For this purpose, a new headquarters officially began operations in Rostock. Russia protests.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has summoned German Ambassador Alexander Graf Lambsdorff to protest against the opening of the naval headquarters to strengthen NATO’s eastern flank. It was a violation of the Two-Plus-Four Treaty concluded in the course of German unification, which prohibits the stationing of NATO troops in East Germany, the Foreign Ministry said in a statement. Federal Defense Minister Boris Pistorius (SPD), however, emphasized at the opening on Monday that no applicable contracts would be violated.

“The ambassador was informed that this step by the ruling circles in Germany continues the creeping revision of the results of the Second World War and the militarization of the country,” the ministry said. The federal government was asked to explain the step immediately. Lambsdorff confirmed to the dpa news agency that he had been summoned. He announced a message.

“Washington, Brussels and Berlin must be aware that the expansion of NATO’s military infrastructure into the territory of the former GDR will have extremely negative consequences and will not do without a corresponding response from the Russian side,” the ministry in Moscow said with.

In light of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine and the resulting tensions in the Baltic region, NATO is strengthening its defense capability in the Baltic Sea. Numerous Baltic Sea neighbors and NATO partner countries are involved in the new headquarters of the German Navy (CTF Baltic). Pistorius made it explicitly clear that the CTF Baltic was not a new NATO headquarters. It is a national headquarters where no NATO troops are stationed. This is not a violation of the two-plus-four contract.
