Before the Prime Minister’s Conference in Leipzig on Thursday, the head of the Rhineland-Palatinate government, Alexander Schweitzer, called for more money from the federal government to care for refugees. “The financing of refugee costs must be as dynamic as the refugee numbers,” said the Social Democrat to the “Editorial Network Germany” (RND). If one does not want to endanger social peace, states and municipalities must be able to cover refugee costs without having to restrict the ability to act elsewhere.
The federal government must cushion the “significant financial expenses” of the municipalities, including for the Ukrainian refugees who are not subject to asylum law. “We need fast trade and no blockades,” said Schweitzer. The Association of Cities and Municipalities also considers the payment to be too low and insists on expanding it. The flat rate set so far is far from sufficient, said managing director André Berghegger to the RND.
Last year, the federal and state governments agreed to change the system for financing refugee costs. The federal government pays an annual flat rate of 7,500 euros for each first-time asylum applicant and no longer pays an annual total of around 3.7 billion euros as before.
