More and more women and girls are becoming victims of violence. This is shown by the police crime statistics, even if such crimes are likely to be largely unreported.
According to police statistics, violence against women and girls is increasing sharply in Germany. As a special analysis of police crime statistics shows, 62,404 girls and women were victims of crimes against sexual self-determination last year. These include rape and sexual assault.
In the previous year, the police authorities counted 58,900 female victims of similar crimes. In 2015, the police were aware of 32,460 female victims of this crime, which is expected to be largely unreported. “Bild” first reported on the special evaluation.
According to the information, there was also a significant increase in the number of female victims of crimes against personal freedom in 2023. For these crimes, which include forced prostitution, cases with more than 148,000 female victims were recorded last year. For comparison: Last year the police counted around 134,000 female victims nationwide. In 2013, around 106,000 women and girls were affected.
Faeser wants “much more decisive action”
“The increased violence against women is unbearable and calls for even more decisive action,” said Federal Interior Minister Nancy Faeser, commenting on the figures. The SPD politician says: “We need harsh punishments, electronic ankle bracelets and mandatory anti-violence training.” Anyone who refuses such training must then receive severe sanctions. It is good that the mandatory anti-violence training, which has proven successful in Austria, is now part of the draft to reform child custody law presented by Federal Justice Minister Marco Buschmann (FDP).
The justice department must decide on electronic ankle bracelets
Faeser had already said at the federal and state interior ministers’ conference in June that bans on perpetrators from entering the apartment and approaching the woman affected by violence must be “consistently enforced and closely monitored.” She is already in contact with Buschmann about this. In addition, perpetrators should be monitored with an electronic ankle bracelet.
The Federal Ministry of the Interior is working within the federal government to ensure that the Violence Protection Act is supplemented by the possibility of ordering “mandatory perpetrator work” and electronic residence monitoring, said a spokeswoman. There is close communication with the justice department responsible for the law regarding the electronic ankle bracelet.
The Federal Ministry of Justice has set up a federal-state working group on the issue, which met for the first time on July 1st.
