Boris Johnson’s days as British Prime Minister may be numbered. There is already speculation about his successor, with at least seven names up for debate, including Finance Minister Rishi Sunak.
How long will Boris Johnson be Prime Minister? His opponents within the party apparently sense their chance for rebellion. According to the British media, several MPs from his Conservative Party want to express their distrust in the head of government. “His time is up,” the Telegraph quoted a member of parliament as saying. Johnson may be threatened with disempowerment in a parliamentary debate on Wednesday. But regardless of the exact date of the fall, there is already a lot of speculation about his possible successor. Rishi Sunak
Britain’s first Hindu finance minister is the current favorite to succeed Johnson. After just five years in politics, the 41-year-old Brexiteer became finance minister in 2020 – a key position amid the pandemic. Sunak gained recognition for his bold actions to save jobs threatened by the lockdown.
He is a good speaker and communicator, his style is always impeccable. The contrast between the polite finance minister and the riotous prime minister could hardly be greater. Sunak worked, among other things, as an analyst at Goldman Sachs before he was elected to Parliament in 2015. He is married to the daughter of an Indian billionaire.
Liz Truss
Secretary of State Liz Truss is also given a good chance of becoming prime minister. The 46-year-old is a free trade advocate and her outspoken voice has made her popular with the conservative base. The post of chief diplomat was a reward for her work as Minister of International Trade.
In this post, Truss negotiated a number of post-Brexit agreements. She originally supported Britain remaining in the EU, but then switched to the Brexit camp. Originally from Leeds, Northern England, Truss worked in the energy and telecommunications sectors for ten years.
Michael Gove
The former journalist was a driving force behind Brexit and is an influential member of Johnson’s cabinet. Since September he has headed the Department of Housing and Communities, which is tasked with implementing Johnson’s plans to boost disadvantaged regions. The 56-year-old ran for Conservative leader in 2016 and 2019, but only came third on both occasions.
Jeremy Hunt
The former foreign and health secretary lost to Johnson in the 2019 party leader election, in which he presented himself as a “serious” alternative. The 55-year-old is fluent in Japanese, currently chairs the Health Committee and has a “nice guy” image.
Hunt, Johnson and former Prime Minister David Cameron were studying at Oxford University at the same time. Before entering politics, Hunt worked as a business consultant and English teacher in Japan.
Sajid Javid
Sajid Javid, the son of a bus driver from Pakistan, has managed many departments, including finance, home affairs and housing. The 52-year-old has been Minister of Health since the summer. In the 2016 Brexit referendum, he voted to remain in the EU due to the economic benefits, but then switched sides. Before entering politics, Javid was a manager at Deutsche Bank.
Priti Patel
Home Secretary Priti Patel is the hardliner in Johnson’s cabinet. She voted against the introduction of same-sex marriage and was a prominent Brexit supporter. Born in London to a Ugandan-Indian family, the 49-year-old takes a hard line on immigration policy. But contrary to their promises, the number of illegal migrants arriving across the English Channel is reaching record levels. Patel was also accused of harassing her employees.
Dominic Raab
The Deputy Prime Minister and Justice Secretary has ruled Britain before: 2020 when Johnson was in intensive care with Covid-19. The 47-year-old former lawyer with a black belt in karate was perceived as a reliable ally in crisis situations thanks to his pragmatic and uncompromising approach. However, that image suffered when he took a leave of absence as foreign minister in August 2021 while the Taliban seized power in Kabul. Shortly thereafter he moved to the Ministry of Justice.
