“Modern Russian weapons, off-road vehicles, motorcycles”: Benjamin Netanyahu is certain that the Lebanese Hezbollah planned to attack Israel via tunnels.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu accuses the Lebanese Hezbollah militia of planning an “invasion” of Israel along the lines of the major Hamas attack on October 7th. Netanyahu told French broadcasters Cnews and Europe 1 that his country had discovered a tunnel system about 100 meters behind the Lebanese border through which Hezbollah wanted to attack with “off-road vehicles, motorcycles and rockets.”
Planned attack “greater than October 7th”
The dimensions of the planned attack were “larger than those of October 7th,” he added. In mid-October, the Israeli head of government told the French daily “Le Figaro” that the Israeli army had found a large quantity of “modern Russian weapons” in Hezbollah hideouts in southern Lebanon.
Immediately after the start of the Gaza war more than a year ago as a result of the radical Islamic Hamas’s unprecedented attack on the south of Israel, Hezbollah opened a second front in Lebanon with constant rocket attacks on the north of Israel. In response, Israel shelled targets in its neighboring country.
800,000 people displaced in Lebanon
For several weeks now, the Israeli army has significantly increased its air strikes on Hezbollah targets in Lebanon and also began ground operations against Hezbollah positions in southern Lebanon around three weeks ago. Since September 23, more than 1,500 people have been killed in Lebanon, according to a count by the AFP news agency based on official Lebanese figures. According to the UN, around 800,000 people were displaced, and almost 500,000 more fled to Syria.
A few hours before the start of an international aid conference for Lebanon in Paris on Thursday, the southern suburbs of the capital Beirut were again shaken by heavy Israeli air strikes. According to the Lebanese Ministry of Health, at least one person was killed; five others were injured, including a child.
135 Hezbollah rockets fired towards Israel
The Hezbollah militia, in turn, shelled Israel again. The army said around 135 projectiles were fired into northern Israel during the day. There was also an air alarm again in Tel Aviv. Four bullets were registered. Some were intercepted, others were struck in open areas. According to rescue services, one person was injured by rocket debris in the coastal town of Nahariya.
