At the Brics summit, UN Secretary General Guterres calls for peace in Ukraine. However, he only receives Putin’s ridicule. But that is not the only humiliation that Guterres experiences.
During his meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin, UN Secretary-General António Guterres reiterated that Russia’s invasion of Ukraine violated international law and the United Nations Charter. Guterres “reiterated its position that the Russian invasion of Ukraine violates the United Nations Charter and international law”said a statement from the spokesman for the UN Secretary General on Thursday after meeting with Putin on the sidelines of the Brics summit in Kazan, Russia.
Guterres also emphasized his commitment to the “Establishment of freedom of navigation in the Black Sea”which applies both to Ukraine and Russia and to the world “Food and energy security” is crucial. “He fully supports continuing negotiations in this regard”it continued.
Brics summit: Guterres demands “just peace”
In mid-July 2023, Russia withdrew from a grain agreement concluded in the summer of 2022. It enabled Ukraine to transport grain across the Black Sea despite Russia’s war of aggression. However, Ukraine opened sea routes for merchant ships from several Black Sea ports at the beginning of August – despite Russia’s announcement that it would target any ship from Ukraine or with Ukraine in the Black Sea after the agreement expires.
Guterres reportedly also spoke to Putin about the conflict in the Middle East, “in particular the absolute need for a ceasefire in Gaza and Lebanon and the need to prevent further regional escalation”. In his speech at the summit of the so-called Brics states, Guterres previously had one “just peace” required in Ukraine.
