Data leaks: Hacker group is said to have spied on Italian celebrities

Some data, such as bank documents and tax returns, are better kept to yourself. In Italy, hackers are now said to have gained access to central databases – all the way up to Meloni.

In Italy, the affair surrounding the illegal acquisition of confidential data by a hacker group is spreading further. Those affected include high-ranking politicians such as the right-wing Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, managers and other celebrities. According to the Milan public prosecutor’s office, around 60 suspects are now being investigated, six of whom have been arrested. The mafia is also said to have a hand in it.

According to investigators, the group gained access to thousands of confidential data sets, including banking and tax records. In addition, in several cases movement profiles are said to have been created using cell phones and credit card statements.

According to previous findings, central databases from the police as well as financial and health authorities were tapped. The gang leader is said to be a former police officer who is now in custody.

Two weeks ago it became known that Prime Minister Meloni’s bank account had also been hacked. The suspicion is directed against a bank employee from the southern Italian city of Bari, who has since been fired. According to media reports, the people spied on include Meloni’s sister Arianna and her former partner Andrea Giambruno.
