The domestic political conflict over the parliamentary elections in Georgia is far from resolved. But a loyal friend of the national conservative leadership comes to visit.
Amid the dispute in the South Caucasus republic of Georgia over the results of the parliamentary elections, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban came to Tbilisi for a visit. Orban is ideologically close to the national conservative ruling party Georgian Dream in the country in the South Caucasus.
He had already congratulated the party on election Saturday, even before reliable results were available. The party that promotes economic ties with Russia has been officially declared the winner, although Georgian and international observers noted many violations of the rules. The opposition demonstrated on the streets of Tbilisi on Monday evening, refusing to recognize the result and calling for new elections.
The government in Tbilisi announced that Orban would be officially received by Prime Minister Iraqi Kobachidze on Tuesday. Hungary is currently holding the rotating presidency of the EU Council. However, most EU states are critical of Orban’s unilateral actions, in which he represents his pro-Moscow position. The German ambassador in Tbilisi, Peter Fischer, wrote on the social network X that Orban speaks for Hungary in Georgia, not for the EU.
