Kamala Harris’ husband, Douglas Emhoff, could become First Gentleman

The outcome of the presidential election in the USA scheduled for November 5, 2024 is awaited with great excitement. It is already clear that this is a historic vote. On the one hand, the choice is for another Donald Trump presidency, with all the uncertainties that this would entail. Or the election of a woman to the highest political office in the United States for the first time – which would also make Kamala Harris’ husband Douglas Emhoff the country’s first first gentleman.

The former lawyer has been married to the prominent politician since August 2014. Just a few weeks ago, the two celebrated their tenth wedding anniversary in a rather unromantic manner on the sidelines of a US Democratic party conference in Chicago. It was Kamala Harris’ first wedding, while Emhoff was married to film producer Kerstin Mackin from 1992 to 2008. His first marriage has two adult children, his son Cole and his daughter Ella.

According to media reports, the two met on a date that was arranged by a friend of Emhoff’s after the two of them met for the first time. The engagement took place almost a year later, and the wedding bells rang a short time later. To this day, the two seem to have an extremely happy marriage – even if Emhoff largely had to give up his previous professional life for the sake of his wife.

After Kamala Harris was sworn in as Vice President of the United States in early 2021, he gave up his previous job as a lawyer for entertainment companies to fully concentrate on his new role as “Second Gentleman.” Shortly after Harris’ swearing-in, Douglas Emhoff commented, “I am a husband and a father first and I support her in every way possible.”

When in August 2024, just a few days before his tenth wedding anniversary with Kamala, an affair between the lawyer and his housekeeper during his first marriage was revealed, the lawyer made no move to deny the allegations. Rather, he went on the offensive with great honesty and commented on the story with the following statement: “During my first marriage, Kerstin and I went through some difficult times because of my actions. I took responsibility, and in the years that followed, we dealt with things as “We have worked through our families and emerged stronger from them.”
