Frank-Walter Steinmeier wants to honor Greece’s acceptance of refugees
On the first day, the Federal President will visit the site of the future Holocaust Museum in Thessaloniki, which is being built with German support, together with Greek President Katerina Sakellaropoulou. Before the war, the Jewish community in Greece numbered around 80,000 members. Only about 12 percent survived the Holocaust. Steinmeier will also visit the town of Kandanos on Crete, which was almost completely destroyed by German troops in June 1941.
Steinmeier also wants to recognize Greece’s commitment to accepting refugees. So far this year, around 46,000 people have come to Greece via the Mediterranean – more than in the whole of last year. Steinmeier wants to visit the registration and reception facility in Malakasa, not far from Athens. The Federal President is accompanied by his wife Elke Büdenbender.
