After the execution of the German citizen Djamshid Sharmahd in Iran, the federal government reacted sharply and drew the first conclusions. More could follow.
The Foreign Office has summoned the head of the Iranian embassy in Berlin to protest against the execution of German-Iranian dual citizen Djamshid Sharmahd. “We have expressed our strong protest against the actions of the Iranian regime and reserve the right to take further measures,” the ministry said on the X platform.
German ambassador recalled from Iran
At the same time, the ambassador in Tehran protested strongly to the Iranian foreign minister against Sharmahd’s murder, it said. Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock also recalled German Ambassador Markus Potzel to Berlin for consultations.
Iran’s judiciary announced Sharmahd’s execution on Monday. He was sentenced to death in spring 2023 in a controversial trial following terrorism allegations. Relatives and human rights activists vehemently rejected the allegations against him.
Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) and Foreign Minister Baerbock (Greens) had already strongly condemned the execution on Monday. Scholz called the killing at Baerbock said that the killing of Sharmahd “shows once again what an inhumane regime there is in Tehran.” Tehran has repeatedly made it clear “that the execution of a German national will have serious consequences.”
