Middle East conflict: UN Security Council calls on Israel to abandon UNRWA ban

The UN Palestinian Relief Agency is considered to have no alternative for providing care to millions of civilians – yet Israel wants to ban it. The UN Security Council has a unanimous message.

The UN Security Council is calling on Israel to reverse the ban on the work of the Palestinian relief organization UNRWA. “The members of the Security Council strongly warned against any attempts to dismantle or diminish UNRWA’s activities and mandate.” Any interruption or suspension of its work would have serious humanitarian consequences for millions of Palestinian refugees, said a unanimous statement by the most powerful UN body in New York, which also includes the veto powers USA, China, Russia, Great Britain and France.

The council’s 15 countries expressed “deep concern” over the Israeli parliament’s decision to ban the UN agency from operating on Israeli territory. The aid organization could hardly continue its operations in the Palestinian territories because Israel controls the border crossings. UN Secretary-General António Guterres appealed in a letter to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to let UNRWA do its work.
