US election: Why Las Vegas is taking risks in the Trump-Harris duel

In front of a glittering skyline across from Caesars Palace, Tiana Bernard has just started her shift at a small pizza shop. People are already lining up here in the morning. “Some have just come from partying, others are going to work,” says Bernard. Like so many, the 37-year-old from Arkansas moved to Las Vegas in hopes of a better life. But in contrast to the glamor on the Strip, her everyday life is anything but glittering. As a single mother, the high rental costs and inflation are a problem for her. She often has to turn over every cent at the end of the month.

Bernard is therefore hoping for a victory for Kamala Harris in the upcoming election. For them it is clear who will take care of the working class. “She worked at McDonald’s, he owns a golden tower,” she says with a dismissive gesture towards the Trump Hotel. Still, she fears that “the tyrant” will win.

As the most important city in the swing state of Nevada, Las Vegas has become a political battleground. A week before the election, Harris and Trump are virtually neck and neck in polls. Billboards with “Trump 2024” and “When we fight, we win” adorn the streets. In the restaurants, one election commercial after another is playing on the screens. And on the Strip, vendors sell shirts ranging from “Hotties for Harris” to “Party like a Patriot.” Both candidates have appeared here several times in recent weeks. Trump last last Thursday, Harris announced again this week. The Republicans see their chance to turn the state, which has voted Democratic for 20 years, red. And nowhere does Trump’s promise to save America work better than here.
