US election: White House: Biden wants to attend the inauguration

It is actually considered good form in the USA for an outgoing president to attend the swearing-in of his successor. The Republican Trump didn’t respond. Biden now wants to do it differently.

According to the White House, US President Joe Biden wants to attend the inauguration of his successor in January regardless of the election outcome. “To take part in the inauguration, to be part of a historic process that takes place regularly – he will certainly take part in that,” said Biden’s spokeswoman, Karine Jean-Pierre, in the daily press conference when asked. “It’s not about him. It’s about the American people. This is what the American people need to see, regardless of who wins.”

In the presidential election next Tuesday (November 5th), Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump will compete against each other. The 81-year-old Biden withdrew from the presidential race after increasing criticism of his old age and proposed his deputy as a replacement candidate. It comes down to a neck-and-neck race between Harris and Trump.

In the USA it is actually a given that the outgoing president takes part in the inauguration of his successor. However, contrary to tradition, Trump did not attend the swearing-in of his Democratic successor Biden in January 2021. He left the White House a few hours before the inauguration. To this day, he still does not acknowledge his defeat in the presidential election four years ago.
