“Only minor changes” to the election results is the result of the election authorities in Georgia. This confirms the ruling party’s election victory.
A partial recount of votes after the disputed parliamentary election in Georgia has confirmed the ruling party’s victory, according to the electoral authority. The recount in around twelve percent of the polling stations and around 14 percent of the total votes resulted in “no significant change in the previously announced official results,” the electoral commission told the AFP news agency on Thursday.
“The final counts changed only slightly in about nine percent of the newly counted polling stations,” it said.
After counting almost all votes, the election commission declared the Moscow-friendly ruling party Georgian Dream the winner with 53.9 percent of the votes. The pro-Western opposition alliance came to around 37.8 percent. The opposition accuses the government camp of “stealing” their election victory.
Georgia: EU calls for an investigation
International observers also found irregularities in the elections. The European Union called for an investigation into the allegations.
On Wednesday, the Georgian public prosecutor’s office opened an investigation into suspected election fraud. It was said that President Salome Zurabishvili had been “summoned” on Thursday to examine allegations of an unlawful victory by the ruling party. However, Zurabishvili does not want to comply with the summons.
