Orban expects immediate Trump initiative on Ukraine war

Former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder remains friends with Vladimir Putin despite the war in Ukraine. This also applies to Hungary’s Prime Minister Viktor Orban. Both complain about too little diplomacy in the conflict.

If he wins the US election, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban is convinced that Donald Trump will immediately launch an initiative for a diplomatic solution to the Ukraine war, even without the Europeans. “We are preparing,” Orban said after a phone call with Trump at a discussion event in Vienna. Orban is considered one of Trump’s most important European contacts. “You will sit down with the Russian president in no time and conduct negotiations,” Orban continued, referring to a possible Trump government team. The presidential election in the USA will take place on November 5th.

The possible Russian-American negotiations will be about keeping the conflict out of world politics as much as possible in the future. The role of the EU in this is unclear. The EU still hasn’t understood that the war is lost for Kiev, said Orban at an event on geopolitical issues hosted by the Swiss weekly newspaper “Weltwoche”, which was also attended by former Chancellor Gerhard Schröder.

Support from former Chancellor Schröder

Schröder supported Orban with a view to his recent trips to Kiev, Moscow, Beijing and the USA. Instead of criticizing Orban for this, as was done by the EU, Schröder said he deserves the important support of Germany and France. Trump is actually the one who wants to make a contribution to ending the fighting. “I would praise him again…” said Schröder, referring to the Republican.

Negotiations at this point will not be about peace, but only about an end to the deaths through a ceasefire, said Orban.

Former Chancellor maintains friendship with Putin

Schröder has been friends with Russian President Vladimir Putin since his chancellorship from 1998 to 2005 and continues to work for the majority Russian companies on the Nord Stream pipelines through the Baltic Sea. Although he has called the Russian attack on Ukraine a mistake, he still maintains his friendship with Putin.

Orban has made no secret of his desire for Trump to win the election against Kamala Harris on November 5th. He said recently that he would pop the corks on the champagne bottles if the Republican was re-elected US President.

A possible election victory for Trump worries many in the EU. This involves, for example, cooperation in NATO and the question of whether Europe can rely on America’s support in an emergency.
