Negotiations for a ceasefire between Israel and the Lebanese Hezbollah are dragging on. So far without success. US Secretary of State Blinken is now optimistic.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken sees “good progress” in ceasefire negotiations between Israel and the Lebanese Hezbollah militia. “There is still more to be done,” said Blinken in Washington. The progress would come from his recent trip to the region and the ongoing talks. They are working “very hard” to “make progress in understanding what would be needed for the effective implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 1701,” Blinken added. UN Resolution 1701 requires Hezbollah to withdraw behind the Litani River – about 30 kilometers from the border with Israel.
Meanwhile, US envoy Amos Hochstein has held talks in Israel in an effort to reach a ceasefire. He first met Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. White House Middle East Coordinator Brett McGurk was also involved in the conversation. The two negotiators then also met Israeli Defense Minister Joav Galant. Lebanon’s Acting Health Minister Firas Abiad told Arabic news channel Al Jazeera that there was no sign so far that the government had received any results from the talks in Israel.
