Germany: Afghan deported from church asylum back

After just two weeks
Afghan deported from church asylum – now he is back in Germany

A rejected asylum seeker receives church asylum. Hamburg still deports the Afghan to Sweden. Two weeks later he was back – and was promptly taken into detention pending deportation.

An Afghan man has returned to Germany just two weeks after being deported from a church asylum in Hamburg to Sweden. The 29-year-old tried to apply for asylum again in mid-October, the Hamburg Office for Migration said. He was immediately taken into custody and is currently in detention pending deportation. “A timely transfer back to Sweden is being prepared,” it said.

The deportation on September 30th was the first from a church asylum in Hamburg. It was carried out in accordance with the Dublin Regulation, under which foreign nationals are sent back to the EU country responsible for their asylum procedure. The deportation was sharply criticized by refugee initiatives, the Left party and the churches.

Application for asylum in Germany after nine years in Sweden

According to the interior authorities, the 29-year-old initially lived with relatives in Sweden after leaving Afghanistan nine years ago and applied for asylum there. This was rejected. That’s why the man came to Germany in the spring of this year. The Federal Office for Migration and Refugees rejected a new application because it is not responsible. The man then sought refuge in a Catholic parish in Hamburg over the summer.

The “Hamburger Morgenpost” initially reported on the Afghan’s return.
