If Donald Trump is re-elected, he could influence the Ukraine war before his inauguration. Security expert Christian Mölling believes so.
If Donald Trump is re-elected to the White House in next week’s US presidential election, this could decisively change the fate of Ukraine – even before Trump’s inauguration. That’s what Christian Mölling, director of the “Europe’s Future” program at the Bertelsmann Foundation, believes.
Mölling: Donald Trump would become a “para-president”.
“If he is elected, he will be a kind of para-president,” said the political scientist star– “The international situation”. Mölling assumes that Trump would “put pressure” on incumbent Joe Biden before his inauguration. So he could try to implement his announcement that he wanted to end the war in Ukraine “within 24 hours” as quickly as possible.
Mölling does not rule out a “surprise effect”. “If Trump sets out and says, ‘I’m going to bring peace within 24 hours’ and he doesn’t succeed because Russia refuses to allow him, then the question is of course whether he will then feel compelled to support Ukraine even more,” says the expert: “According to the motto: I am the American president and I am the greatest anyway.”
In the case of a second term in office, however, another factor is crucial. “Trump won’t change. His erratic, unpredictable manner will remain,” said Mölling: “The question is how professional the people around him will be. A lot will depend on what happens.”
