US election: Trump: I am the “father of fertilization”

At the beginning of the year, a US court made a ruling that placed artificial insemination at the center of the political debate. Trump positions himself – and accuses his competitor of lying.

US presidential candidate Donald Trump has described himself as the “father of fertilization”. His competitor Kamala Harris was lying when she claimed that he was against artificial insemination, Trump emphasized in a campaign speech in Greensboro in the battleground state of North Carolina. “I consider myself the father of fertilization.”

The Republican Trump is trying to particularly address women and families with this topic. He announced in the summer that the US government would pay for artificial insemination, also known as in vitro fertilization (IVF), if he wins the presidential election on November 5th. Alternatively, insurance companies should be forced to pay for treatment – an unusual position for Republicans.

The issue has been controversial in the US since the Alabama Supreme Court ruled earlier this year that frozen embryos are considered children. Several clinics in the southern state then suspended their corresponding treatments because there were too many unanswered legal questions. The ruling corresponds to the theory advocated by abortion opponents that embryos and fetuses should be considered children and enjoy legal protection.
