The US election lasts for many hours due to the different time zones. Here you can find out when the last polling stations close in the United States.
On November 5th, the United States of America will elect a new president. Democratic candidate Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump are in a neck-and-neck race to succeed incumbent Joe Biden.
In the USA, voting traditionally takes place on Tuesday. Since many people have to go to work, the polling stations open much earlier than usual in Germany – in some states as early as six in the morning. There is also the option to cast your vote before election day by post or in the “early voting” process. How long citizens have to vote on November 5th varies from state to state.
US election 2024: This is how election day works
Because the United States spans multiple time zones, there is no consistent time when the election ends. First, the polling stations in the states of Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, South Carolina, Vermont and Virginia on the US east coast close at around one o’clock German time. With the polling stations closing in Hawaii and Alaska, the election will end at 7 a.m. our time.
Afterwards, the major news channels publish their first projections. However, it may take some time until a final result is determined. The large number of postal votes is likely to cause the counting to be delayed. In addition, there is likely to be an extremely close result in some states, the so-called swing states.

As usual, the vote on the US Congress will also take place at the same time as the presidential election. All 435 seats in the House of Representatives and around a third of the 100 seats in the Senate are up for election. In addition, the governor will be elected in eleven states.
