Israeli hostages have been held in the Gaza Strip for almost 13 months. Prime Minister Netanyahu is therefore criticized. Now he pulls out the checkbook. But can Islamists be bought?
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu wants to offer the Hamas hostage takers in the Gaza Strip millions of dollars for the release of each hostage and a safe departure with their families. A corresponding report from the Israeli TV station Channel 12 was confirmed to the German Press Agency by Israeli government circles.
However, Hamas representative Taher al-Nono described the offer as a “farce” in an interview with dpa. Release would only be an option if there was an agreement that would enable an end to the war and the blockade and the reconstruction of the coastal strip.
Of the approximately 250 people abducted from Israel during the Hamas massacre on October 7, 2023, around 100 are still being held in the Gaza Strip, although many of them are no longer expected to be alive after more than a year of war. Relatives accuse Netanyahu of preventing an agreement on release. He, however, blames Hamas.
