In rural Montana, a Republican wins a Senate seat for his party. The Republicans have already secured the majority in the chamber in the US election.
Republican candidate Tim Sheehy has won one of the Senate seats for the northern US state of Montana, defeating Democratic incumbent Jon Tester. The AP news agency reported this based on voter surveys and initial vote counts.
The Republicans thus expanded their majority in the important chamber of Congress, which they had already secured earlier on election night. Until now, the Democrats had a razor-thin majority in the Senate. The loss of control of the parliamentary chamber is a serious blow for them.
A total of 34 of the 100 Senate seats were re-allocated in this election, with eleven of these races considered to be particularly hotly contested. At the same time as the presidential election and the vote on the Senate, the elections for the composition of the US House of Representatives also took place, in which all 435 seats were up for election. It was still unclear on Wednesday morning (local time) who would form the majority there in the future.
