Former Interior Minister Seehofer is doing it like former Chancellor Merkel. Since his departure, he has been more reserved with comments. However, he now has to answer questions in a committee.
In the Bundestag’s Afghanistan investigation committee, the questioning of political celebrities begins this Thursday with the questioning of former Federal Interior Minister Horst Seehofer (CSU) as a witness. Several of the witnesses to whom the members of the committee want to ask questions in the meetings until Christmas are no longer politically active. In addition to Seehofer, these include former Defense Minister Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer (CDU) and ex-Foreign Minister Heiko Maas (SPD).
The committee is supposed to clarify decisions surrounding the withdrawal of the Bundeswehr from Afghanistan and the evacuation mission in August 2021. The Bundeswehr left the country faster than planned in June 2021. At that time, it followed the timeline of the USA. In August 2021, when the Taliban took the capital Kabul after a lightning offensive with virtually no resistance, Germany took part in an international military evacuation operation. There were chaotic conditions and dangerous situations around the airport.
The Federal Intelligence Service (BND) is accused of having misjudged the pace of the Taliban offensive. There were also differences of opinion between the Federal Ministry of the Interior and the Foreign Office regarding the procedure for issuing visas for so-called Afghan local workers.
