After the rift in the traffic light coalition, the Chancellor wants to ask the vote of confidence – in mid-January. The CSU is pushing for quick decisions.
In view of the failure of the traffic light coalition, the CSU in the Bundestag is calling for quick clarity for an early federal election. “The vote of confidence needs to be made as quickly as possible,” said CSU regional group leader Alexander Dobrindt to the German Press Agency. He added: “Government vacuum is not an option for Germany. We are ready for quick new elections.”
Chancellor Olaf Scholz (SPD) had previously announced that he would dismiss Finance Minister Christian Lindner (FDP). He also announced that he would have a vote on the vote of confidence in the Bundestag on January 15th. The members of the Bundestag could decide “whether to clear the way for early elections.” The election could then take place “by the end of March at the latest, in compliance with the deadlines provided for by the Basic Law”. The regular election is scheduled for September 2025.
