Donald Trump’s victory could change the world forever. Political scientist Carlo Masala on the question of how Germany and Europe should react to his re-election.
Mr. Masala, Trump clearly won the US presidential election. What does this mean for Germany?
We definitely need the turning point now. Trump will either return to his behavior from 2016, i.e. make the American security guarantee for Germany and Europe dependent on our concession. Or he will react even more radically than back then and withdraw from Europe entirely.
How should Germany react?
We need to invest massively more in our security. It is no longer a question of investing two percent of the gross domestic product in defense. If we had to compensate for the American loss, at least three to four percent would be necessary.
