As President of the USA, Donald Trump will again be commander in chief of the armed forces. Secretary of Defense Austin reminds soldiers of their duties.
US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has vowed the military to undertake a “quiet, orderly and professional transition” following Donald Trump’s election victory. “Our fellow citizens have elected the next President of the United States,” says an internal letter to the armed forces, which the US media consistently quoted. “As always, the U.S. military will stand ready to implement the policy decisions of its next commander in chief and follow all lawful orders (…).”
Austin emphasized that the US armed forces would behave politically neutral and act “with principle and professionalism.” He also recalled the role of the military in defending the constitution and supporting allies.
Deputy spokesperson at the Pentagon, Sabrina Singh, said the minister felt the need to reiterate this. In the past there have been transition phases “that were not seamless, that were not so peaceful.”
